Creating a one-sheet on Canva for your novel

Having a one-sheet in hand at a writing conference is so important. According to Serious Writer, a one-sheet is an introductory tool. It tells an agent or publisher who you are, what you write, and what you’re about. Creating one using Canva is a great way to make a professional and visually appealing pitch to agents or publishers.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you create an effective one-sheet:

Step 1: Set Up Your Canva Account

  1. Log In or Sign Up: Go to Canva and log in if you already have an account or sign up for a new one.
  2. Choose Your Design Type: Once logged in, click on the “Create a design” button and select “Custom dimensions” to set the size of your one-sheet. A typical size is 8.5 x 11 inches (standard letter size).

Step 2: Choose a Template

  1. Browse Templates: Search for “one-sheet,” “sell sheet,” or “fact sheet” in the template search bar.
  2. Select a Template: Choose a template that aligns with the tone and style of your novel. You can adjust colors, fonts, and elements and make it suit your novel and/or brand.

Step 3: Customize Your One-Sheet Layout

  1. Title and Header: Replace the placeholder text with your novel’s title and a compelling tagline or subtitle.
  2. Cover Image: Add a high-quality cover image of your novel. If you don’t have a cover yet, use a placeholder image and describe the cover concept.
  3. Blurb: Write a brief, engaging blurb of your novel. Capture the essence of the story and hook the reader. Don’t tell the ending!

Step 4: Add Key Information

  1. Author Bio: Include a short bio about yourself, highlighting any relevant credentials, awards, or previous publications.
  2. Genre: Clearly state the genre of your novel.
  3. Word Count and Target Audience: Mention the word count of your novel and describe the target audience or readership. Be sure to let them know if the novel is complete or when you intend to have it ready.

Step 5: Design Elements

  1. Fonts and Colors: Choose fonts and colors that match the tone of your novel. **Keep it professional and easy to read (think whitespace).
  2. Visuals and Graphics: Incorporate any relevant visuals or graphics. This could include quotes from early reviews, a small author photo, or thematic elements that reflect your novel’s genre.
  3. Contact Information: Provide your contact details, including email address, website, and social media handles if applicable.

Step 6: Review and Finalize

  1. Proofread: Carefully check for any typos or errors. Make sure all the information is accurate and up-to-date.
  2. Seek Feedback: If possible, get feedback from friends, writing groups, or colleagues before finalizing.
  3. Download and Save: Once you’re satisfied with the design, click the “Download” button and choose your preferred file format (PDF is usually best for printing and emailing).

Step 7: Print and Distribute

  1. Print Copies: If you’re attending a pitch event or writer’s conference, print high-quality copies of your one-sheet.
  2. Email Attachments: When emailing agents or publishers, attach the one-sheet to your query email. Make sure it’s well-formatted and easy to open. **Only do this if that agent or publisher allows attachments. Some don’t, and they specify that.

Tips for a Successful One-Sheet

  • Keep It Simple: Aim for a clean, uncluttered design that makes it easy for the reader to find key information quickly.
  • Highlight Unique Selling Points: Focus on what makes your novel stand out.
  • Professionalism: Ensure that the overall look is polished and professional to make a strong impression.

By following these steps, you’ll create a one-sheet that effectively showcases your novel and makes a compelling case to agents and publishers. Remember that your one-sheet is a reflection on you and be as professional as possible. If you plan to attend a Writing Conference, you’ll need a one-sheet!
