Monthly Themed Reading List Recommendations: Science Fiction

I’ve never been a huge science fiction fan, but I’ve recently read a few sci-fi and/or fantasy books. Science fiction is a genre that is growing and evolving as society changes.

According to Scified.com, “Science fiction is a genre that deals with futuristic concepts such as advanced science and technology. While it is not limited to any one genre, it often includes elements of fantasy and/or dystopian fiction. Some of the earliest works in sci-fi are classics such as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.”

We’ve all heard of Frankenstein, right?

So let’s get to some recommendations for clean science fiction!

Sci-fi titles recommended to me:

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne – “A classic science fiction adventure book about a world tour underwater, written by a French author, and first serialized in a twice-weekly publication.”

Enders Game by Orson Scott Card: “Brilliant young boy trains as a soldier to lead Earth’s defense against hostile alien invaders, facing psychological battles amidst isolation and pressure.” (Also available on Kindle Unlimited.)

The Hybrid Series by Candace Kade – “Lee Urban is living a lie. In a society where everyone’s DNA determines their destiny, being a Natural means automatic relegation to the gritty and dangerous Outskirts. With the harnessed power of gene editing, the ability to create a super-human race has transformed the world and offered the opportunity of a genetically enhanced life. But only to those who can afford it. Born a Natural, Lee Urban was adopted into the Enhanced high society of the Asian Federation and forced to conceal her genetic roots. When her dream of attending Peking University becomes a reality, she is determined to go despite a warning from a mysterious source.”

The Talionis Series by C.J. Milacci – “Her abduction was just the beginning. Her survival will change everything. Bria Averton’s quiet life near the ruins of Portland, Maine, is shattered when she and hundreds of other teens are forcibly taken to the hidden military city of Talionis. The city transforms them into soldiers for a ruthless regime under the unforgiving gaze of Commander Ark. The grueling training is designed to break them—but Bria refuses to succumb.”

FreeFalling by J. L. Burrows – “Under the Dome, peace reigns … forcefully. One hundred and eighty years in the future, the U.S. government eradicates warfare and violence. Serenity should feel safe, but she doesn’t. Serenity Knowles knows two things for certain. Finishing her government-assigned community service as a teacher is mandatory in order to start her adult life. And stopping those in power from reconditioning two of her favorite students will ruin her chances at a future and a life. Everything she thought she once knew to be true, suddenly is now in question after her typically peaceful girls fight in plain view of everyone at school. The Federal Bureau of Acceptance storms in and collects them both for reconditioning—chemical brainwashing. With no one to help, Serenity is driven into a wild rescue and escape plan. The girls can’t be made into shadow children, brainwashed and limited to a menial future.” (On Kindle Unlimited.)

Kerry Neitz – Amish Vampires in Space – “Jebediah has a secret that will change his world forever and send his people into space. The Amish world of Alabaster calls upon an ancient promise to escape destruction. Then end up on a cargo ship bound for the stars. But they are not the only cargo on board. Some of it is alive…or used to be. Now, with vampires taking over and closing in on the Amish refugees, these simple believers must decide whether their faith depends upon their honored traditions or something even older.”

Ronie Kendig, The Droseran Saga – “There’s a price on her head, and it has everything to do with the brand on her arm. Tertian Space Coalition has blessed every planet in the quadrants with high technology, save one: Drosero. But in spite of their tenuous treaty with the ruling clans, TSC has plans for the backward planet. And they’re not alone. After a catastrophic explosion, Kersei Dragoumis awakens in a derelict shuttle, alone, injured, and ignorant of the forbidden technology that has swept her into a nightmare. The brand she’s borne since childhood burns mysteriously, but the pain is nothing to that when she learns her family is dead and she is accused of their murders.”

The Divine Courage Trilogy by C. C. Urie – “From Book 1: Cast out of her family, Larken Hale, the Daughter of the Military, is forced to take up the cause to appease her family. Leaving everything she knows and loves behind, Larken sets out and tries to find her own way. Captain Soren Deckard has only ever known the military, and he understands what is expected of him. But when the District Heiress joins the squad he has worked so hard to perfect, she turns everything he thought he knew upside down. When their two lives clash together, it seems like nothing will survive the carnage. Together, they must learn to trust and accept the other. But when feelings and emotions are set on fire, will the two make it out to the other side?” (All books on Kindle Unlimited.)

Jordan’s World is book 1 in a 3-book series. Written by Allen Steadham, the series starts with teenage Jordan Lewis and her mother being abducted to an alien world and seemingly marooned there. However, God has a plan for Jordan’s life, and all she has to do is trust Him. Along her decades-long journey, Jordan matures, finds love and family, and experiences extraordinary triumphs and devastating heartbreak. And yet, Jordan has one decision to make that surpasses them all.
