How to Serve Others as a Writer
At my first writing conference, I prayed about how to serve others with my writing. I knew I was to serve. But how?
As writers, we’re often focused on crafting stories, polishing sentences, and getting our work into the world. But writing isn’t just about producing content or publishing books—it can also be a beautiful way to serve others.
Words have power. They connect, encourage, challenge, and heal. And that means your writing can be an act of service—whether you’re published, aspiring, or somewhere in between.

Here are some meaningful ways you can serve others through your gift of writing:
1. Write to Encourage
Send a note, an email, or even a text message to someone who needs a lift. A few genuine words can make someone feel seen and valued. If you’re comfortable, write public encouragements on social media—shout out another writer, celebrate someone’s small win, or share a quote that helped you.
Concrete way to do this – many groups on FB call for author shoutouts. What a great way to celebrate another writer!
2. Another way to serve others: Offer to Beta Read or Edit
If you’ve developed your craft, you can support another writer by offering feedback on their work. It might not seem like much, but your thoughtful comments could be the push they need to keep going—or to finally submit that manuscript.
Concrete way to do this – join a critique group. Also, many FB groups have calls for beta readers.
3. Volunteer with Literacy Programs

Many local schools, libraries, and nonprofits are seeking volunteers to assist with literacy and creative writing programs. Reading to kids, mentoring a teen writer, or helping adults learn to read—that’s a powerful way to use your writing skills to serve.
Concrete way to do this – ask at your local library!
4. Create Free or Low-Cost Resources
Consider creating a writing prompt calendar, journaling guide, or mini-workshop and offering it for free (or “pay what you can”) to your community. These small acts can encourage new writers, teachers, or people looking to process life through words.
Concrete way to do this – ask in your FB group or on your page what people need. Lots of authors are using Substack to offer extra resources.
5. Support Causes with Your Writing
Use your platform to raise awareness for causes that matter to you. Write a blog post, craft a short story inspired by real-life events, or collaborate on a fundraiser anthology. Stories have the power to move people to action.
Concrete way to do this – just start! Pick something that matters to you and do it!
6. Tell Someone Else’s Story with Care
Sometimes the most generous thing we can do to serve others is to tell someone else’s story with empathy and respect. Whether you’re interviewing someone for a newsletter, ghostwriting, or documenting a piece of family history, it’s an act of service to help someone be heard.
Concrete way to do this – start with a family history.
7. Simply Share Your Words

Don’t underestimate the impact of showing up and sharing your voice. It’s truly a way to serve others. A blog post, poem, or essay written with honesty and heart can touch someone who needs it—right when they need it most. You may never know the ripple effect, but it’s real.
Concrete way to do this – I’ll say it again, just do it! It may take extra time or get you out of your comfort zone, but I encourage you to try!
Final Thoughts
Serving others as a writer doesn’t have to mean grand gestures or formal programs. It can be as simple as offering your time, your attention, or your words. Whether you’re writing for one person or many, your words matter—and using them to lift others is one of the most powerful things you can do.
You never know who needs what only you can say.
