Can you believe it’s time to go back to school? Here in West Tennessee, our students started in early August!

Autumn is the perfect season to curl up with a good mystery—or even better, to write one of your own. Picture the crunch of leaves underfoot and the hum of school life mixed with a few curious secrets.

I’ve pulled together some fun prompts to spark your imagination, whether you’re dreaming up a charming whodunit, a lighthearted suspense, or a mystery with plenty of autumn atmosphere. Grab your favorite mug of something warm–I suggest coffee–and let’s dive in!

  • Detention and Deception
Five students are assigned Saturday detention. Only four walk out. The locked classroom holds more than just textbooks.
  • The PTA Poison Plot

  • Mystery at the Locker Line

  • The Case of the Vanishing Valedictorian
The school’s star student disappears before the first day of senior year. The only clues are a missing textbook and a schedule that doesn’t belong to her.

🎒More writing prompts for the back-to-school season:

  • The Haunted Yearbook
A mystery writer who returns to teach creative writing at her alma mater finds an old yearbook with cryptic symbols—then starts receiving eerie notes referencing the school’s long-buried scandal.
  • Recess and Revenge
