1Pretty Journal or Notebook

Probably my very favorite thing to receive for Mother’s Day is a high-quality leather journal or pretty notebook. They’re a beautiful and practical gift. We writers love having a special place to jot down our thoughts, ideas, or work on drafts.

Custom Author Portrait or Book Cover Art

Commission a custom portrait of your mom as a writer or create personalized book cover art with her name. It can make a meaningful, artistic gift that celebrates her literary passion. My oldest daughter drew and painted my first book cover for me! It’s proudly hanging in my study.

Writing Accessories

Just a few of my favorites:

  • Pens: A luxurious pen can elevate the writing experience.
  • Bookmarks: Unique, handmade bookmarks that fit her style can make reading and writing even more enjoyable. Check out these pretty Bible bookmarks and these delicate metal bookmarks.
  • Writer’s Desk Accessories: Elegant and functional items like a wooden desk organizer, a personalized pen holder, or a cozy reading lamp.

Book Subscription Box

A subscription box for books can give mom a regular supply of new reads. Options like Book of the Month or a genre-specific box (e.g., mystery, fantasy) would allow her to enjoy discovering new authors. Try this one for cozy mystery lovers!

Customized Book Embosser

One of my BFF’s gave me a customized book embosser. It’s so fun, and a great way for authors to make their books feel more personal and official. A personalized book embosser lets mom stamp her books with a “From the library of [Name]” mark.

Literary Candles

There are many candles inspired by famous books or writers, with scents that evoke literary environments. You can find candles with titles like “Old Books,” “Library,” or “Bookish Delight,” perfect for creating a cozy writing atmosphere.

Author-Themed Apparel

One of my favorite places to get bookish T-shirts is Piper & Ivy. Their Ts and sweatshirts fit great, and they have plenty of fun ones to choose from.

Typewriter or Vintage Writing Tools

A vintage typewriter can be a beautiful and nostalgic gift for a writer who loves the tactile experience of writing. It also serves as a decorative piece of art for her office. My youngest daughter bought me the typewriter in the picture.

Books by Her Favorite Authors

Last, but not least, if there’s an author or book series she loves, gifting her a special edition or signed copy can be an extremely thoughtful and personal gesture.

A well-thought-out gift like one of these can show how much you appreciate mom’s creativity and help her feel inspired and motivated in her writing journey. Be sure to read my blog post on 25 Best Christmas Gifts for Writers for other ideas!

Hi, I’m Jen! I’ve been married for over 39 years, have 5 amazing kids and 3 adorable grandkids. I homeschooled our three youngest children, and I used to blog about homeschooling. I also taught Oral Communication as an adjunct instructor for over 5 years.

Jen Dodrill Writes is born of a passion of mine – to write a novel! My first cozy mystery – Birds Alive! – released Feb. 27, 2024! And book #2 in the series – Where’s the Quetzal? – released Feb. 25, 2025!

When I’m not working, you’ll find me writing, spending time with my family, or curled up on the couch reading and drinking a mug of dark roast coffee. (Don’t forget to check out my mug shop – JDMugs!)
