My favorite authors
I am a book nerd – and proud of it! If you get me talking about my favorite authors, I will be at it for awhile. I read a number of different genres and have favs in each.
If I had to tell you my 3 top favorites, I think it would be:
- Greg Iles
- James Patterson
- Amanda Flower
But wait, there are more! Looking through my Instagram, I see I read a lot of Colleen Hoover, Linwood Barclay, R.B. Marshall (a new fav), David Rosenfelt, Lisa Gardner, and Kate Carlisle.
Like I said, a lot of variety!

My favorite authors by genre
I love cozy mysteries! The series I’ve just started reading – The Highland Horse Whisperer Mysteries by R.B. Marshall – is set in Scotland (my dream vacay) and has great characters!
Amanda Flower writes some fun cozies too. You can check her books out here! The series I started with was her Magical Bookshop series.
Oh wait! One of the first cozy series I started was Leigh Perry’s Family Skeleton Mysteries. Fun and funny! Sid is a talking skeleton who is “alive.” Trust me, try them.
James Patterson & Greg Iles
James Patterson is up there with the world’s best-selling fiction authors. I have read all of his Women’s Murder Club series and the Michael Bennett series. Alex Cross is probably his best known character. (I’ve read most of his stand-alones also.)
And then, I met Greg Iles. His Penn Cage character – awesome! And those books are set in Natchez, one of the most beautiful places in the South. When I met Greg, he played the guitar and talked. And–he’s in a band with Stephen King! How cool is that?
Okay, I’ll calm down. 🙂
More of my favorite authors
Colleen Hoover is basically a household name now. She self published her first books, but in 2021/22 she exploded onto the book world.
Linwood Barclay writes great, fast-paced thrillers. Lots of “language” in his books, but the premises are off-the-wall good.
My mom was a librarian for years, and even at the age of 86, she still talks books with me. She introduced me to David Baldacci, and all I can say is, “Thanks, Mom!” His character Amos Decker is a favorite of mine.
Favorite Christian authors
I read a wide variety of fiction, and besides the authors above, I have some favs in Christian authors:
- Francine Rivers
- Karen Kingsbury
- Eva Marie Everson
- Lisa Wingate
- Lynette Eason
- Gilbert Morris
- Frank Peretti
And soooo many more!
What’s really fun is now that I’m attending writers’ conferences, I get to meet some amazing Christian authors. 🙂

Hi, I’m Jen! I’ve been married 37 years, have 5 amazing kids and 2 adorable grandkids and one on the way. I homeschooled our three youngest children. I used to blog about homeschooling and taught Oral Communication as an adjunct instructor for over 5 years.
Jen Dodrill Writes is born of a passion of mine – to write a novel! When I’m not working, you’ll find me writing, spending time with my family, or curled up on the couch reading and drinking a mug of dark roast coffee. (Don’t forget to check out my mug shop – JDMugs!)
