Plot Points and Pinch Points: Understanding Their Role in Fiction Writing
When we write our novel, we must understand the roles of plot points and pinch points. These structural elements work together to drive the narrative forward, create tension, and keep readers engaged. Let’s look at what they are, their differences, and how they collaborate to shape our stories.
What are Plot Points? According to Joe Bunting on The Write Practice, “… plot points are the big moments, the key events that change everything.” They often mark significant changes for the protagonist and drive the overall narrative arc forward.
Key plot points in a novel:
- Inciting Incident: This is the event that sets the main plot in motion and introduces the central conflict. It prompts the protagonist to take action or make a decision that initiates the story.
- Plot Point 1: This typically occurs near the end of the first act/beginning of the second—at about the 25% mark. It forces the protagonist to confront the main conflict head-on, leading to rising tension and stakes.
- Midpoint (plot point 2–50% mark): The midpoint shifts the story from reaction to action. It often involves a revelation, decision, or event that changes the protagonist’s goals or approach to achieving them.
- Plot Point 3 (End of Act 2–75% mark): This occurs near the end of the second act. It escalates the conflict and raises the stakes for the protagonist, setting the stage for the climax.
- Climax: The climax is the highest point of tension in the story, where the protagonist faces the central conflict in a decisive confrontation or moment of truth.
- Resolution: The resolution resolves the main conflict and provides closure for the story. It may include the protagonist’s growth or change as a result of their journey.
What are Pinch Points?
I learned about pinch points from Patricia Bradley. Pinch points are specific moments in your story that remind readers of the antagonist’s presence and the looming threat or obstacles the protagonist faces. They reinforce the stakes and increase tension by showing the antagonist’s actions or the consequences of the conflict. As Pat puts it, it’s a time to “pinch” the protagonist.
Here’s how they function:
Pinch Point 1: This occurs around the 37% mark of the story and reminds us of the antagonist’s goals, strengths, or influence. It raises doubts about the protagonist’s ability to succeed.
Pinch Point 2: Near the 62% mark, this pinch point intensifies the conflict and puts additional pressure on the protagonist. It highlights the antagonist’s power or reveals a new threat or complication.
How Do They Work Together?
Plot points and pinch points work together to create a cohesive and engaging narrative structure by:
-Driving the Narrative: Plot points drive the main storyline forward by introducing new challenges, decisions, and resolutions that shape the protagonist’s journey.
-Building Tension: Pinch points maintain tension throughout the story by reminding readers of the antagonist’s presence and the obstacles the protagonist must overcome. They keep the stakes high and reinforce the urgency of the conflict.
-Balancing Action and Reflection: Plot points often involve significant action or decisions by the protagonist, while pinch points provide moments of reflection or realization about the challenges ahead.
Together, plot points and pinch points create a dynamic narrative arc with rising tension, escalating conflicts, and pivotal moments that lead to the climax and resolution.
Summing up plot points and pinch points
Understanding the roles of plot points and pinch points is essential for structuring a compelling fiction novel. Plot points drive the overarching storyline and character development, while pinch points maintain tension and emphasize the antagonist’s role in the conflict. By strategically incorporating these elements, we can craft a well-paced and engaging narrative that captivates readers from start to finish.
Experiment with their placement and impact in your story to enhance its structure and emotional depth, ensuring a satisfying and memorable reading experience.
